Student volunteers of Swansea University celebrated their flying achievements in 2007. Swansea Airport was the venue for Discovery Student Volunteering to receive their Investing in Volunteers Award.
Discovery runs some twenty-four projects split into six teams. The teams cover children’s projects, help those with disabilities, deal with fundraising, use their practical skills as volunteers, other teams comprise of medical students and one that works with vulnerable adults. The students run each project.
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Swansea, Councillor Gareth Sullivan and the Vice Chancellor of Swansea University, professor Richard Davies attending the event spoke enthusiastically about the importance of volunteering and in particular the great work and commitment of the team at Discovery.
On behalf of Wales Council for Voluntary Action Mark Bendon presented the Investors in Volunteering award. Mark said ‘the assessor of the scheme had closely examined 4 key areas of volunteer involvement - planning for volunteer involvement; recruitment of volunteers; selecting and matching of volunteers to opportunities and the support and retention of the volunteers.’
Mark also stated ‘this is the new quality standard for organisations that involve volunteers in their work. Its aim is to drive up the standards of volunteers in their management, make volunteering more rewarding, provide organisations with better capacity and help them gain maximum benefit from their volunteers. The assessor commented that Discovery utilised a high number of overseas volunteers and that disabled volunteers were active in all areas of the organisation including the Trustee board’.
Christine Watson, Manager of Discovery said ‘This award is a huge achievement for us, but much more importantly a chance to thank our volunteers for all the great work they do.’

Bu myfyrwyr o Brifysgol Abertawe sy’n gwirfoddoli’n dathlu eu llwyddiannau mawr yn 2007. Maes Awyr Abertawe oedd y fan lle derbyniodd Discovery Student Volunteering eu Gwobr Buddsoddi mewn Gwirfoddolwyr.
Mae Discovery’n rhedeg oddeutu pedwar ar hugain o brosiectau a rennir yn chwe thîm. Mae’r timau’n cwmpasu prosiectau plant, yn cynorthwyo rhai ag anableddau, yn ymdrin â chodi arian, yn defnyddio’u sgiliau ymarferol fel gwirfoddolwyr, ac mae timau eraill yn cynnwys myfyrwyr meddygol ac un sy’n gweithio gydag oedolion agored i niwed. Y myfyrwyr sy’n rhedeg pob prosiect.
Yn bresennol yn y digwyddiad yr oedd Dirprwy Arglwydd Faer Abertawe, Y Cynghorydd Gareth Sullivan and Dirprwy Ganghellor Prifysgol Abertawe, Yr Athro Richard Davies, a buont yn siarad yn frwdfrydig iawn am bwysigrwydd gwirfoddoli ac yn benodol am waith mawr ac ymroddiad y tîm yn ‘Discovery’.
Ar ran Cyngor Gweithredu Gwirfoddol Cymru cyflwynodd Mark Bendon y wobr Buddsoddi mewn Gwirfoddolwyr. Dywedodd Mark ‘fod asesydd y cynllun wedi edrych yn fanwl ar 4 maes allweddol o gyfraniad gwirfoddolwyr - cynllunio ar gyfer cyfraniad gwirfoddolwyr; recriwtio gwirfoddolwyr; dewis a chyfatebu gwirfoddolwyr â chyfleoedd a chefnogi a chadw gwirfoddolwyr.’
Dywedodd Mark hefyd mai ‘dyma’r safon ansawdd newydd ar gyfer mudiadau sy’n cynnwys gwirfoddolwyr yn eu gwaith. Ei phwrpas yw codi safonau rheoli gwirfoddolwyr, gwneud gwirfoddoli yn brofiad mwy cyfoethog, rhoi mwy o gapasiti i fudiadau a’u helpu i gael y budd mwyaf posibl o'u gwirfoddolwyr. Dywedodd yr asesydd bod Discovery’n defnyddio nifer uchel o wirfoddolwyr o dramor a bod gwirfoddolwyr anabl yn weithgar ym mhob un o feysydd y mudiad, gan gynnwys y Bwrdd Ymddiriedolwyr’.
Dywedodd Christine Watson, Rheolwraig Discovery: ‘Mae’r wobr hon yn llwyddiant ysgubol i ni, ond yn bwysicach na hynny, mae’n gyfle i ddiolch i'n gwirfoddolwyr am yr holl waith gwych a wneir ganddynt.'
