Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC) has become the first higher education institution in the UK to achieve the Investing in Volunteers award. SVC is run through a partnership between Cardiff University, the Innovate Trust and Cardiff University Student’s Union. Our aim is to enhance the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the community in Cardiff, and in the process gives students the unique chance to work on rewarding projects as volunteers. We are one of the UK’s largest student volunteering organisations with approximately 900 volunteers working in over 35 projects.
Volunteering activities range from educational projects with local primary and secondary schools to the ‘big festive sleep out’ where more than 150 student volunteers spent a winter’s night sleeping rough in Cardiff’s city centre to highlight the difficulties faced by the city’s homeless and to raise money for the charity Cardiff Action for the Single Homeless.
Educational projects continue to expand with volunteers working to help children in Cardiff with their literacy and numerical skills and helping them to achieve their potential. A new project is also underway working with the Cardiff hands on science centre Techniquest and local primary schools to promote enthusiasm for science from an early age.
Charlotte Davies, Chair of Student Volunteering Cardiff said: "The Investing in Volunteers Award is a fantastic achievement and a wonderful recognition of all the hard work contributed by everyone involved in SVC to the community of Cardiff."
The official award ceremony took place on Thursday 1st March at Cardiff University and was attended by The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Gareth Neale and Jenny Randerson AM for Cardiff Central. Speakers included Sue Pickavance, Director of Volunteering at the WCVA, Pat Arnold of Age Concern and SVC’s Chair and Vice Chair Charlotte Davies and Sam Smith. The award was presented to SVC’s Chair by Professor Teresa Rees CBE, Pro Vice Chancellor for Staff/Student Issues at Cardiff University.
In closing the ceremony The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Gareth Neale said: ‘The City is proud to acknowledge the enormous contribution made by student volunteers to our community…I am confident that as students graduate they will not only take the ethos of volunteering with them but leave a lasting legacy of the benefits they have brought to the children, young people and adults of Cardiff.’
Gwirfoddoli ymhlith Myfyrwyr Caerdydd
Gwirfoddoli ymhlith Myfyrwyr Caerdydd (SVC) yw’r corff cyntaf ym maes addysg uwch yn y DU i ennill y wobr Buddsoddi mewn Gwirfoddolwyr. Rhedir SVC trwy bartneriaeth rhwng Prifysgol Caerdydd, yr Ymddiriedolaeth Arloesi ac Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd. Ein nod yw gwella bywydau aelodau difreintiedig ac agored i niwed yng nghymuned Caerdydd a, thrwy gyflawni hynny, mae’r myfyrwyr yn cael cyfle unigryw i weithio ar brosiectau haeddiannol fel gwirfoddolwyr. Ni yw un o brif fudiadau gwirfoddoli ymhlith myfyrwyr yn y DU, gydag oddeutu 900 o wirfoddolwyr yn gweithio gyda dros 35 o brosiectau.
Mae’r gweithgareddau gwirfoddol yn amrywio o brosiectau addysgol gydag ysgolion cynradd ac uwchradd lleol i’r ‘wylnos fawr ar y stryd’ pan fydd dros 150 o fyfyrwyr yn gwirfoddoli i dreulio noson aeafol yn cysgu allan ar y stryd yng nghanol dinas Caerdydd i dynnu sylw at yr anawsterau y bydd pobl ddigartref y ddinas yn eu hwynebu a chodi arian i’r elusen Caerdydd yn Gweithredu dros Bobl Sengl Ddigartref.
Mae prosiectau addysgol yn parhau i ehangu gyda gwirfoddolwyr yn gweithio i helpu plant yng Nghaerdydd gyda’u sgiliau rhifedd a llythrennedd a’u helpu i gyflawni eu potensial. Mae prosiect newydd hefyd ar droed, yn gweithio gyda’r ganolfan gwyddoniaeth ymarferol Techniquest ac ysgolion cynradd lleol i hybu brwdfrydedd ynghylch gwyddoniaeth o oed ifanc iawn.
Dywed Charlotte Davies, Cadeirydd Gwirfoddoli ymhlith Myfyrwyr Caerdydd: “Mae’r Wobr Buddsoddi mewn Gwirfoddolwyr yn gamp aruthrol ac yn gydnabyddiaeth ardderchog i’r holl waith caled a wnaed gan bawb sy’n ymwneud ag SVC ar ran cymuned Caerdydd.”
Cynhaliwyd y seremoni wobrwyo swyddogol ddydd Iau 1 Mawrth ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, ac yno’r oedd Y Gwir Anrhydeddus Arglwydd Faer Caerdydd, y Cynghorydd Gareth Neale a Jenny Randerson AC Canol Caerdydd. Roedd y siaradwyr yn cynnwys Sue Pickavance, Cyfarwyddwraig Gwirfoddoli WCVA, Pat Arnold o Age Concern a Chadeirydd ac Is gadeirydd SVC, Charlotte Davies a Sam Smith. Cyflwynwyd y wobr i Gadeirydd SVC gan yr Athro Teresa Rees CBE, Is Ganghellor Materion Staff/Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd.
Wrth gloi’r seremoni, dyma oedd gan Arglwydd Faer Caerdydd, y Cynghorydd Gareth Neale i’w ddweud: ‘Mae’r Ddinas yn falch o gydnabod y cyfraniad aruthrol a wnaed gan fyfyrwyr yn gwirfoddoli yn ein cymuned…. Rwy’n hyderus y bydd y myfyrwyr, unwaith iddynt raddio, yn mynd ag ysbryd gwirfoddoli gyda nhw, ac maent yn gadael rhodd barhaol ar eu holau, sef y buddiannau a ddaw i ran plant, pobl ifanc ac oedolion Caerdydd trwy eu hymdrechion.’
