We had done the pilot study, felt it had been beneficial and like to present a professional approach.

What benefits have you found from working towards Investing in Volunteers?

A really good way to make you look at the systems, policies and procedures within the organisation and the best way to bring everything up to date.

How did the assessment work in your organisation?

As volunteer co-ordinator I did nearly all the work and worked systematically through the assessment work I had help with policies from a trustee.

5 Practical tips you would give another organisation working towards Investing in Volunteers

  • Don’t worry about updating old information before you start
  • Be methodical and plan time in your week for doing the IiV
  • Use your assessor for guidance
  • Make sure that you inform people working in your organisation - including the volunteers!! - what you are doing, why you are doing it and what you hope to gain before you start so that they will be supportive
  • Get plenty of folders, stickers, a tray and a big file so that you can keep all your work together and cross reference as you go along.
