Humankind, formerly DISC, support people with complex health and social needs and help them to build healthier and more meaningful lives. They've held the IiV accreditation since April 2015 and successfully renewed in July this year. Ann Hall, Volunteer Development Manager, discusses how IiV strengthens their volunteer programme and she gives advice to organisations working towards achieving the standard.
What have been the overall benefits of achieving the IiV accreditation?
The information has been useful for our Business Development Team when writing bids. A large number of contracts are asking for volunteer involvement. We are able to shine a light on our volunteer programme through the data we have on people, hours, case studies, our induction and training programme etc, but to be able to say we have IiV just puts a seal of approval on top of all that.
The IiV award has been highlighted as a positive aspect of our programme by volunteers on our induction.
As the Manager of the volunteer programme it's fantastic for me, and our communications team, to be able to incorporate IiV in our news stories and bulletins. I sit on various forums across the regions, generally facilitated by Volunteer Centres, and when people know you have the IiV accreditation I feel it gives weight to your opinions and experience. I find people contact me for support and advice outside of the forums knowing we have the accreditation. I see this as a compliment and I’m very passionate about volunteering, especially about ensuring volunteering is accessible to all, so given the chance, I can talk volunteering all day long. Overall IiV strengthens our volunteer programme by highlighting the standards we meet.
Do you have any advice for other organisations on how to work towards and get the most out of the IiV award?
Ensure your application is a team effort as it’s a chance to reflect on your volunteer programme. Use IiV as an opportunity to bring your volunteers together. It’s also a chance to ensure your programme is operating to current standards and allows for you to identify any areas of development and showcase any areas of good practice both internally and externally to your organisation. Humankind are very proud of our IiV accreditation and want to maintain holding the award.
